According to a letter sent to dealerships by Mercedes-Benz USA, the only cars sold in North America under the Smart brand will be electric as of September this year.


Two models, the Fortwo and Fortwo convertible, will be battery-powered versions of the combustion engine models.


It is unclear whether this will also be true worldwide, and Daimler isn’t responding to requests for further information.

As sales of Smart cars were around 145,000 worldwide last year, with 6,211 of those sold in the US, it will be interesting to see if this move increases those numbers at all. And given the small percentage the brand represents in overall sales for the company, how long before the brand gets ditched?
